Blue Linked's strength is to set up, coordinate and implement multidisciplinary projects

Some of our activities include:

  • Design and management of public aquaria and research laboratories.
  • Cultivation of marine algae, zooplankton (food animals), fish and marine invertebrates such as corals.
  • Designing protocols for cultivation techniques and dive activities in public aquaria.
  • Designing, running and coordinating conservation projects and workshops based on the sexual reproduction of corals.
  • Co-organising and participating in scientific expeditions.
  • Forging alliances between various parties including conservation agencies, commercial enterprises, scientists and government.

Blue Linked was established in 2011 by Michael Laterveer (1963). Michael worked for more than 15 years as a marine biologist at Rotterdam Zoo (the Netherlands), where he was closely involved in the design and the construction of the zoo’s Oceanium. As curator, manager and technical diver, Michael was responsible for the daily management of a team of animal keepers, laboratory technicians, divers, technical staff, students and volunteers. He also founded the marine laboratory of the Oceanium for the cultivation of marine organisms and the implementation of scientific research. Michael was one of the initiators of the aquarium’s public laboratory, where visitors can experience the activities that are required for growing and keeping marine organisms.

Working at Blue Linked, Michaël is primarily concerned with the preservation of marine aquaculture and nature conservation projects. In his work, he always searches for interesting alliances, in order to strengthen the 'linked' in his business. Michael also expresses undiminished efforts to train young people in the marine sector. 'After all, that's what makes my work worthwhile!'
